You are seated on your flight, ready for take off, already thinking about what you’ll do once you land.  However,  a number of things must be considered before your plane takes to the skies.  For instance, someone must determine how much fuel the plane needs. They also have to decide how to change its schedule if there’s dangerous weather. The skilled workers handling these matters are what we call flight dispatchers. They work behind the scenes to make sure each plane has a safe journey.

當你坐在飛機上準備起飛，已經在思考著陸後要做什麼。但是，在飛機起飛之前必須考慮很多事情。例如，某人必須確定飛機需要多少燃料。天候不佳時，他們還必須決定如何更改行程表。處理這些重要問題的人就是所謂的飛航管制員。他們在幕後工作並確保每架飛機都有安全的旅程。

Flight dispatchers organize flight schedules and track planes’ passages from special centers on the ground. They’re also in charge of making sure planes and their crews meet safety guidelines.

飛航管制員組織飛航行程表，並在塔台上追蹤飛機航程。他們還負責確保飛機及其機組人員符合安全準則。

Because flight dispatchers have such important roles, people must go through lots of training before they can become one. First, they need to take five to six weeks of air travel classes to become certified. Then, they spend more than a year working under real flight dispatchers as an assistant to get hands-on experience. Afterward, they take a written and oral exam on what they’ve learned. If they pass these, they’ll earn their wings and become one of the workers keeping our skies safe.

由於飛航管制員具有如此重要的任務，因此必須經過大量的培訓才能成為飛航管制員。首先，他們需要參加五到六週的飛航課程才能獲得認證。然後，他們花了一年多的時間協助正式的航班調度員工作，以獲得實務經驗。然後，就所學內容經過筆試和口試。如果通過這些認證，他們將成為維護飛航安全的其中一員。
